Where to Go in Spain for Your First Trip: 7 Destinations to Consider

Planning your first trip to Spain can feel slightly overwhelming.

There are beautiful cities, beaches, islands, historic towns, incredible food and very different landscapes spread across the country. And if you only have one or two weeks, you obviously can't see everything.

So, where should you actually go?

The answer depends on the kind of trip you want to have.

For your first visit, I usually recommend choosing two or three destinations that complement each other, rather than trying to fit as much of Spain as possible into one itinerary.

To help you get started, here are seven destinations I'd consider for a first trip to Spain, from iconic cities and Andalusian gems to Mediterranean islands and Spain's gastronomic north.

1. Madrid — The Best Introduction to Spain's Capital

If you want to experience Spain through its culture, food, history and vibrant city life, Madrid is a fantastic place to start.

The Spanish capital combines grand boulevards and historic squares with neighbourhoods full of independent shops, tapas bars and restaurants.

You can spend a morning visiting the Royal Palace, explore the Prado Museum, walk through Retiro Park and finish the day with tapas and drinks in one of the city's lively neighbourhoods.

What I particularly like about Madrid for a first trip is that it gives you a good introduction to Spanish city life without feeling as tourist-focused as some of Europe's other capitals.

And its location makes it incredibly useful when building a wider Spain itinerary.

From Madrid, you can easily add destinations such as Toledo or Segovia, or continue south by high-speed train towards Andalusia.

Best for: Culture, museums, food, history and first-time visitors to Spain.

How long?: I'd recommend 3–4 nights for a first visit.

2. Barcelona — Architecture, Food & the Mediterranean

Barcelona is one of the easiest destinations to recommend to a first-time visitor to Spain.

You have Gaudí's architecture, beautiful neighbourhoods, incredible food, the Mediterranean and a fascinating combination of Catalan and Spanish culture all in one city.

Of course, there are the classics: the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló.

But Barcelona is much more enjoyable when you leave some time to simply wander.

Explore the Gothic Quarter, stop for lunch, walk towards the waterfront, spend an afternoon discovering Gràcia or sit down for a long dinner rather than rushing from one attraction to the next.

For couples, Barcelona can also work beautifully as part of a romantic Spain itinerary.

Best for: Architecture, culture, food, beaches and couples.

How long?: 3–4 nights is a good starting point.

3. Seville — The Heart of Andalusia

If you want to experience the atmosphere many people imagine when they picture Spain, Seville should be high on your list.

The city is full of orange trees, beautiful courtyards, historic buildings, tapas bars and flamenco.

The Royal Alcázar, Seville Cathedral and Giralda are obvious highlights, but some of my favourite moments in Seville happen between the major sights.

Wandering through Santa Cruz.

Stopping for tapas.

Finding a beautiful courtyard.

Sitting down for a drink as the city comes alive in the evening.

And then, of course, there's flamenco.

For a first trip to Spain, Seville is particularly easy to combine with other Andalusian destinations, making it one of my favourite starting points for exploring southern Spain.

Best for: History, architecture, food, flamenco and romance.

How long?: I'd recommend 3 nights, or 4 if you want to explore at a slower pace.

4. Granada — History, the Alhambra & the Albaicín

Granada is smaller than Madrid or Barcelona, but it can leave a huge impression.

The city's most famous attraction is, of course, the Alhambra, one of Spain's most extraordinary historic sites.

But Granada deserves more than a quick visit to the palace.

Spend time exploring the Albaicín, admire the views towards the Alhambra, discover traditional tea houses and enjoy the city's famous tapas culture.

Granada is also one of my favourite destinations for couples.

There is something particularly atmospheric about watching the sunset over the Alhambra, wandering through the old neighbourhoods and having dinner somewhere with a view.

Best for: History, architecture, romance, culture and food.

How long?: 2–3 nights.

5. Málaga — Mediterranean Spain Beyond the Beach

Málaga is sometimes treated as little more than the gateway to the Costa del Sol.

I think that's a mistake.

The city has transformed into a fantastic destination in its own right, with museums, galleries, historic architecture, excellent restaurants and a lively atmosphere.

You can visit the Alcazaba, explore the historic centre, visit the Picasso Museum and then walk down towards the waterfront for dinner.

And, of course, you have the Mediterranean.

Málaga is particularly useful for travellers who want to combine city, culture and beach time in the same trip.

It can also work as a base for exploring other parts of Andalusia and the surrounding coast.

Best for: Sun, culture, food, beaches and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.

How long?: 2–3 nights for the city itself, longer if you're exploring the surrounding area.

6. Mallorca — The Island Escape

If your idea of Spain includes turquoise water, beautiful coves and long lunches overlooking the Mediterranean, Mallorca should be on your list.

But Mallorca isn't just a beach destination.

You can explore Palma's historic centre, drive through the Tramuntana mountains, visit beautiful villages such as Valldemossa and Deià, discover hidden coves or spend a day sailing along the coast.

This makes Mallorca particularly versatile.

You can make it a relaxing island holiday, an active trip, a romantic escape or a combination of all three.

For first-time visitors who don't want to spend their entire trip moving between cities, Mallorca can also be a wonderful way to experience a different side of Spain.

Best for: Beaches, nature, couples, relaxation, food and Mediterranean lifestyle.

How long?: I'd recommend 3-4 nights.

7. San Sebastián — For Food Lovers

And finally, one for travellers who want to discover Spain through its food.

San Sebastián in the Basque Country is one of Europe's great gastronomic destinations.

The city combines an incredibly beautiful setting around La Concha Bay with a compact historic centre, beaches, elegant architecture and a remarkable food scene.

This is the place to spend an afternoon moving from one pintxos bar to another, sit down for a memorable meal and take your time enjoying the city.

It's also an excellent base for exploring more of the Basque Country.

You can venture further afield to places such as Bilbao, visit coastal towns and discover the region's distinctive culture and cuisine.

Best for: Food, wine, beaches, culture and couples.

How long?: 3 nights is a good starting point.

How Many Destinations Should You Visit on Your First Spain Trip?

This is one of the questions I get most often.

My answer is usually: fewer than you think.

  • For a week, I'd normally recommend two destinations.

  • For 10 days, two or three.

  • For two weeks, you can comfortably combine three or four, depending on the distances and how you want to travel.

The goal isn't to collect cities, it’s to have enough time to actually experience them. That means sitting down for a long lunch. Having an afternoon with no plans. Getting lost in an old neighbourhood. Stopping for another glass of wine.

And discovering something that wasn't on your itinerary.

That's often what you'll remember most.

Planning Your First Trip to Spain?

Choosing where to go is only the beginning.

The best Spain itinerary isn't necessarily the one that includes the most destinations. It's the one where the destinations, hotels, experiences and travel time all work together.

That's where personalised travel planning can make a difference.

I can help you decide where to go, how long to stay in each destination, which boutique hotels fit your style and which experiences are actually worth adding to your trip.
